Bonsai

Bonsai is the art of growing dwarfed, ornamentally shaped trees or shrubs in small shallow pots or trays. "Bonsai" is a Japanese pronunciation of the earlier Chinese term penzai. A "bon" is a tray-like pot typically used in bonsai culture and "sai" means planting.

Bonsai can be created from nearly any perennial woody-stemmed tree or shrub species that produces true branches and can be cultivated to remain small through pot confinement with crown and root pruning.

The oldest known bonsai trees still living can be found in a private restaurant garden in Tokyo, Japan and its more than 800 years old.
